Derelict Blogger Who Always Stays Clear of the Closing Doors

I confess my sins. Sorry!

Of late, neglecting the indulgent pleasure of blogging. Am I turning into one of those rushing around no face expression people? There's often much to tell, but there is so much non-computer time of life that needs to be absorbed and spent. Maybe it's because the weather has gotten better. Maybe I am a fair-weather blogger.

I have a story though. There's been a dearth of weird happenings... or maybe I'm just xiguan now. But, luckily, came across one of those beautiful moments when China collides with NYC.

So i share... a subway moment:

Some Chinese kid was going bonkers on the train. His mom starts yelling at him in Chinese, and he was running around and whooping and stuff, and yelling back in Chinese and spitting, etc.

Then, all of a sudden, mid-Chinese, he stops; and in perfect English, tones as bold as brass, he says "NEXT STOP 23rd St. ELY AVE TRANSFER AVAILABLE TO THE 7, THE E, AND THE V". Exactly like the subway announcer does it, word for word.

Seconds later, right on time, the conductor makes the real announcement, but of course included the enthusiastic "stay clear of the closing doors"... so the kid immediately makes the whole announcement again, plus that addendum.

Then they went back to yelling in Chinese.

Thankful for weird Chinese moments.

  5. Amber,
I'm glad you got to see Matisyahu! Also happy that your loving the food in New York! I was wondering, could you do like a tv show or something? I'm really missing you. Your personality is unmatched. When I'm caught up on my school work, I have been going back to your podcast. I would even listen to you reviewing a bowling match, or talking about the Stimulus package. Your really special and still missed!!!! Any new pictures?

  8. Glad to hear all's well and that you're getting a non-computer time life.Much more important than blogging.Nice story. With all that yelling it must be a funny feeling, knowing Chinese as you do,that you're more privy to their dialogue than they're likely to realise. All the best Amber.

  9. HI Amber, I'm a graphic designer and became a podcast junkie when I realized that I'm more productive and creative when i am mentally engaged. Anyhow I discovered your china podcast yesterday and just finished listening to the last one. I didn't expect it to just end like it did... and was overcome with sadness. What a wuss, huh? it recalled the pain I've felt leaving a place returning to another... or after the last episode of one of my favourite TV shows. Your personality, friends and portrayal of life in contemporary china was really engaging and captured beautifully the life of a warm personality in the exploration of an alien culture. Well, best of luck in NYC.

  12. Any chance Amber, you know anyone who attended Regis High School"? I ask because Father Dorgan ALWAYS prompted us when reading aloud to "speak in tones as bold as brass" and your blog, from Manhattan is about the only place on the internet where the phrase "tones as bold as brass" pops up intact.

Also, I have a niece at Columbia who grew up in Taiwan, and knows some Chinese.
